Henrietta and Ralph conferred over the new developments in the case over a cup of coffee from a local shop. She explained what Ruth had admitted to and tried to defend her friend as best as possible to Ralph. Then again, she was just as frustrated as Ralph seemed to be about the whole situation.

“I know, I don’t like the fact that she didn’t tell me about this either.”

“It’s more than that, Henri,” Ralph said, sipping from his mocha. “It’s the fact that she brought you here under false pretenses.”

“I wouldn’t go that far…”

“I would.” He nailed her with a stern look. “She only told you what she wanted to tell you. Withholding information is dangerous, and she could have put you in a really bad situation with what she didn’t tell you.”

“I understand, but she didn’t do that. Not in the end.”

He made a sound but didn’t say more.

“What really matters is finding out who is behind this. We’ve got quite the list of suspects at this point.”

“There are quite a bit of people that seem to be wrapped up in this.”

“Right. I mean, right off the bat, I consider Burt Malcom as suspicious. There he was, swearing to us that his company would have the contract when, after talking with the mayor, it seems less likely that is true. And that’s after being the one to suggest it in the first place.”

“Yeah, and then there’s that Ned fellow. He’s a character. Let’s that little girl lie for him without bothering to set anyone straight.”

“That seems even more suspicious to me than Burt, since Ned names some woman but not her relationship to him. I mean, how can we even know she exists?”

“We can’t. And you know what I’m going to do?” Ralph spun his coffee cup in a slow circle in his hands. “I’m going to tail that fellow and see what he’s up to.” A light jumped into his eyes when he said this, and she knew he was excited about the fact that there could be some footwork involved.

“Then I’m coming with you.”

“Now hold on there,” Ralph protested.

“What am I supposed to do? Go back to Ruth’s cottage and wait? I’ve never been one to sit on the sidelines and you know that.”

“All right. I suppose that’s true. Are you sure you want to?”

She gave him a look that said she was shocked he even had to ask and that settled the matter.

Later that evening, Henrietta joined Ralph in his truck as they sat at the corner across the street from the tour shop. Ned was just getting off work and they were going to tail him the rest of the night, wherever that may take them.

“Nothing like being on a stakeout,” Ralph said, pulling out a bag of popcorn.

“Snacks already?” she said, one eyebrow raised.

“You betcha.” He munched on the popped corn while Ned hopped into his car and turned on his headlights. When he pulled out and passed Ralph, they waited a few moments before Ralph pulled out behind him.
